Play on the Jolt 3 war maps server it has a nice rotation with almost all the essential maps. Aim is much more skilled based in RTCW only 2 -3 headshots will be a kill much faster gameplay and movement as well.

As far as just learning the basics of each map is concerned Sonic, the easiest way i found was to open my own server on a particular map and explore it. Look at the objectives and complete it in a few different ways, look around, etc.
Obviously, like you say, the rest of it is down to building skill which is different to demo but before you can really do that you have to build your confidence in the maps.

/map beach.pk3 does wonders |
